Vatican Museums. A unique emotion from the entrance inaugurated in the year 2000 where the services are situated (safety controls, cloackroom, information office and guided tours, ticket counters, currency exchange, bookstore, nursery, first aid) to facilitate the visitors in what is probably the largest museum complex in the world.

The history of the Vatican Museums has ancient roots: the seed from which the Vatican Museums started, was the collection of sculptures made by Julius II in the early 1500's, in fact, as few people remember, the popes were among the first sovereigns who put their art collections at disposal of the culture and the public.

To give just an idea of the magnitude and complexity of the Vatican Museums, here is a list of the individual museum areas that are within: Gregorian Egyptian Museum, Gregorian Etruscan Museum, Antiquarium Romanum, vases collection, Museum of Classical Antiquities, Pio-Clementino Museum, Chiaramonti Museum, New Wing, Gregorian Profane Museum, Pio Christian Museum (with Christian and Jewish Lapidari), Picture Gallery, tapestries, ceramics (9th-18th century), Mosaics, Religious Modern Art Collection Museum, Missionary-Ethnological Museum, Sacred Museum, Vatican Historical Museum (Lateran Apostolic Palace).

And here's a list of the Vatican Palaces, sites which are typically included in the visit to the Vatican Museums, that you can plan while staying at Colonnato di San Pietro B&B in Rome: Belvedere Palace (Pio-Clementino Museum), Upper Galleries (Sala della Biga, Chandeliers Galleries, Tapestries, Geographical Maps), St. Pius V's apartment, Sala delle Dame, Immaculate's Room, Raphael's Rooms, Sala dei Chiaroscuri, Niccolina Chapel, Chapel of Urban VIII, Borgia Apartment, Sistine Hall, Aldobrandini's Wedding Hall, Lower Galleries (Urban VIII, Alexandrine, Clementine) and of course the most famous and popular of these places, the Sistine Chapel. By staying at Al Colonnato di San Pietro Bed and Breakfast in Rome, you are granteed a real closeness to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.

The Sistine Chapel is named after Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, who restored an old chapel. The decorations of the walls represent false drapes, as well as Stories of Moses and Christ and the portraits of the Popes. These works were done by a team of great painters such as Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli. By order of Pope Clement VII de 'Medici, towards the end of the year 1533 the Sistine Chapel was enriched by Michelangelo who painted the altar's wall with the Last Judgement.
