Begin your visit to Rome from Trastevere, the old neighborhood which takes its name from the Latin words Trans Tiberim meaning (place) across the Tiber, just to indicate that this region of the city was on the opposite bank of the river Tiber compared to where the historical centre of Rome originally stood and developed.

Trastevere still retains its ancient flavour thanks to the winding streets covered with "sampietrini" (typical cobblestones of Roman streets) which are leaned by medieval houses today mostly converted into luxury residences. The district of Trastevere is one of the favorite among tourists who come to visit Rome because at night is filled with people from all over the world, thanks to the richness of bars, restaurants and pubs, pizzerias, sandwich and ice creams shops, and cafes with prices suitable for any budget. In the district there are cinemas, markets, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, shops of all kinds, elegant shops and craft shops.

To reach the picturesque district of Trastevere from Al Colonnato di San Pietro Bed and Breakfast, you just need to walk down to the river Tiber and follow it to the right reaching the beautiful Sisto Bridge. In front of the bridge Trilussa Square spreads, a square dedicated to the most important Roman dialect poet, this square can be considered one of the gates to the Roman nightlife: from there you can reach the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, in the middle of the same square, and the Rome Museum (Museo di Roma) in Trastevere, which is dedicated to the folkloric aspects of the city.

The Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, was founded by the will of Pope Saint Callistus and constructed as a basilica by Pope Julius I, [337-352] and later restored during the ninth and thirteenth centuries. The present form dates back to the rebuilding of the years 1138-48 which took place under Pope Innocent II. In 1702 Clement XI commissioned the elaboration of the porch, the changing of the facade, while architect Virginio Vespignani performed a stylistic restoration between the year 1866 and 1877. The interior is divided into three naves by twenty-two ancient granite columns supporting a trabeation which consists of ancient fragments and continues until the counter. The cosmatesco floor, dating back to the year 1200, was almost completely rebuilt by Vespignani. The lacunar wooden ceiling was designed by Domenichino [1617] who painted the Assumption in Glory in the central octagon.
